Regarding our Second Empire Mansard Victorian

The Mansard originated during the Renaissance, although it was not called Mansard. The roof is characterized by 2 slopes on each of four sides. The lower slope is steeper than the upper slope. Dormers are often set in the slope. Other features are cornices at the top and base of the roof, brackets beneath the eaves and bay windows. The name Mansard is attributed to Francois Mansard (1598-1666), a carpenter in Paris. He revived interest in this style of architecture during the Baroque period, an age of ornate architecture and extravagance. In the 19th Century, Napoleon's nephew who was President of France, in a bloody coup d'etat established the Second Empire and set himself up as Emperor of France. During his rule, the mansard roof and other ornate elements in architecture were in vogue. Many fine examples can be found on the Cape notably in Provincetown and Cotuit. If anyone knows of other high concentrations of Mansards on Cape Cod, please let me know. I would appreciate it.

Charles Dexter bought the land in Sandwich ,which eventually became the Heritage Museum, in 1921. He owned a cotton textile company in New Bedford and spent summers in Sandwich. Dring that time he grew vegetables and plants. His interest in flowers and plants led him to develope several varieties of rododendrons. He gave many away and he didn't record his methods. After his death, the land was bought and sold many times before Mr. and Mrs. J. K. Lilly III who founded Heritage Museums & Gardens purchased the land. The Maple Street Inn is a member of the Thorton Burgess Society-we support the work that is done there. Thorton Burgess was born in Sandwich. He wrote Children's books-170 of them. His purpose was to nurture the appreciation of nature in youngsters at an early age." The Adventures of Peter Cottontail" and "Old Mother West Wind" are two favorites. As he has said,"to inspire reverence for wildlife and concern for the natural environment", was the goal of his work. The Green Briar Center carries on this goal. Jelly Kitchen, Nature Trails, Flower Garden, workshops, lectures and outdoor activities-birdwatching, canoeing, etc.are ongoing all summer.

Last Summer, we had a Nantucket Special. For a 5 day stay we provided 2 round trip tickets for the standard Hy-Line boat to Nantucket. Here they are docked today. The pier is approximately 7 miles from the inn.

Len and I spent a lovely evening on Sandyneck Beach. We bought our dinner at Amari's and found a lovely spot with a Cape Cod Bay view! Dinner by the bay on an unseasonably warm May evening, what a joy!

The tourist industry, especially Inns and B&B's is constantly getting better. We are attending and hope to put all new ideas into practice, well some of them. I'm excited to go.

A little history about Thanksgiving:

Len and Pat are descendants of the 15th century settlers of Plymouth and Cape Cod
The celebration of Thanksgiving was instituted in 1789.
In 1789, Elias Boudinot, Massachusetts member of the House of Representatives, moved that a day of Thanksgiving be held to thank God for giving the American people the opportunity to create a Constitution to preserve their hard won freedoms. A Congressional Joint Committee approved the motion and informed President George Washington. On October 3, 1789, the President proclaimed that the people of the United States observe " a day of public thanksgiving and prayer", on Thursday, the 4th week in November.
The holiday was instituted for all of us to enjoy and appreciate what we have and to appreciate our families and friends, particularly significant in these troubled financial times. Let's share a glass half full not half empty and reflect on the Pilgrims who arrived on these shores in deep financial debt. Some were indentured and were obligated to work to pay off their debts before starting a new life in a new land.
